Rukum local unit decides not to issue licence to establish private schools

With an objective to reform the school sector so that children from all background can have access to education, a local unit in Rukum (West) has decided to stop issuing licence to establish private school in the administrative unit.

A three-day long municipal council meeting of Aathbiskot Municipality which concluded on Saturday has decided not to issue any licence to set up new private schools, and to focus on imparting quality education at the community schools.

Ram Bahadur KC, the acting chief administrative officer at the municipality, said that the meeting also decided not to upgrade classes in the existing private schools.

As per the decision of the municipal council, the permission that was granted to run grade six at Aathbiskot Peace Zone Education Academy, a private school in Radi, will be cancelled. The municipality had recently granted permission to the school to run grade six from the current academic session that began from mid-April. The then District Education Office had issued a licence to the school to run classes up to grade five. There are just two private schools in the local body.

According to Ram Bahadur, the municipality has decided to build five community schools as model educational institutions in the local unit. The municipal council meeting endorsed a work plan to make Himalaya Secondary School in Khadi, Gyanodaya Secondary School in Chautara, Himalaya Secondary School in Danje, Martyr Memorial Model Secondary School in Radi and Adarsha Secondary School in Ghetma as the model schools in the municipality.

In a bid to make these community schools as model institution, the municipality has decided to build physical infrastructures and enhance the quality of education. The council meeting has decided to allocate Rs 10 million to each model school to build a building. The model schools will also have hostel facilities, said Ram Bahadur. The local body has also prioritised technical education in the schools.



The municipality also plans to turn other community schools into model schools in the future.

Gorkha Bahadur KC, mayor of the municipality, said that the municipal council meeting decided to develop Balkalyan Secondary School in Aathbiskot-9 as a technical school.

“We will soon take the necessary initiatives to run various technical subjects ranging from a three-month training to a three-year course,” said KC.
